The director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth supports the Xbox platform and looks forward
#1
Naoki Hamaguchi, the director of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, has expressed his hope to see the critically acclaimed RPG on Xbox consoles sooner rather than later. With the PlayStation 5 exclusivity period for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth coming to an end in May, fans have been eagerly waiting for the game to expand to other platforms.
Square Enix recently announced a shift toward a multiplatform strategy, giving fans optimism that more of the company’s titles will reach a broader audience. While many of Square Enix’s previous games were initially released as PlayStation exclusives before making their way to PC, the studio has now committed to releasing future games on PlayStation, Nintendo, and Xbox consoles. However, Xbox has received the least amount of support from the studio in the past. That could soon change, as Hamaguchi seems to be advocating for the platform.
In a recent interview with GamesRadar, Hamaguchi emphasized his desire to bring the Final Fantasy 7 Remake series to as many players as possible. Although no official release dates for upcoming ports were provided, he made it clear that Xbox is a platform he personally supports. “This is just a personal opinion now, but I’ve got an Xbox myself,” he said. “I think it’s a great hardware platform. I do like Xbox.” His comments echo the excitement that followed the March 2024 release of Final Fantasy 14 on Xbox, prompting many fans to hope for even more entries from the beloved Final Fantasy franchise on the platform.
Hamaguchi also spoke about the changing landscape of the gaming industry, with Square Enix’s decision to release games across multiple platforms reflecting the broader trend. In October, Microsoft revealed that its first-party titles would be making their way to PlayStation and Nintendo consoles as well, with titles like Doom: The Dark Ages and Indiana Jones and the Great Circle set for release on PlayStation 5 in 2025. Hamaguchi noted that the industry has shifted from a time when publishers could release games on a single platform to a more competitive environment where studios need to cater to a variety of players to succeed.
While fans continue to await official news about other Final Fantasy titles making their way to Xbox, development on the final chapter of the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy is progressing. Rebirth is expected to be followed by the concluding installment sometime in 2027 or 2028. In April, it was confirmed that the game's main story had been completed, with producer Yoshinori Kitase recently announcing that no DLC would be released for Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, as the development team is fully focused on the third and final part of the saga. Recently, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth also earned multiple accolades at the 2024 Golden Joystick Awards, including Best Storytelling, marking a significant achievement for the game.
